TPG: Kitsune is a legendary Japanese creature, in the form of the fox, a symbol of intelligence and long life. She is the messenger of the goddess Inari, deity of agriculture, fertility, prosperous futures and abundant harvests. Rice is a sacred crop and the Japanese myths surrounding it are closely related to the concept of the Mother Goddess, who is identified with the earth or the source of all life.

Kitsune has the ability to move from the human to the spiritual world and her statue is commonly found at the entrance to Shinto shrines and temples, with a protective function.

In this wonderful piece Susan has utilized signature ink techniques with metallic inks and ink resists to create the backgrounds. This is one of the sixteen paintings exhibited in Susan’s last public show, at Turning Point Gallery in 1996. Susan portrays Kitsune with an anthropomorphic human hand and fox paw holding the offering of a bowl of rice with a stalk of the rice plant over its left shoulder.

The image was published in the 1998 & 2000 engagement calendars and the 2006 Shaman calendar. “Kitsune” was a color plate, page 236, and written about in the book "Susan Seddon Boulet, A Retrospective", by Michael Babcock, pub. Pomegranate Publications, 2000, with this text:

From Michael Babcock: ”In Susan’s very last show, a few pieces contained brighter colors than she had used in years. One of them was “Kitsune"...
