TPG:There is a lot to write about this important and rarely offered Goddess period work. The imagery of Quan Yin, also know as the Goddess of Compassion, has her origins in ancient Indian Buddhism and is a symbol of enlightenment and spiritual awakening. Quan Yin, (translation: “One who hears the cries of the world”), is often portrayed holding a vessel of pure water, (which in Buddhism is the “divine nectar of life”), in her left hand, while bestowing a blessing, a Mudra with her right. Over her left shoulder is draped a willow branch, used in the spiritual "aspersion" of the water.

As Susan often referenced the Lotus flower in her work because of it’s powerful symbolism and elegance it appears in this piece as well. The lotus flower rises from the mud without getting stained, making it a symbol of purity;  it returns to the murky water each night and blooms again in the morning, representing rebirth; the lotus flower's ability to produce beautiful flowers even in turbid waters symbolizing that beauty is possible even in dark places.

Susan's symbolic "eyes of insight" are found in the four cardinal directions. There is an interesting and unusual use of opalescent ink in this elegant piece.

From Micheal Babcock: The image was published in the Engagement calendars of 1996, 2000, 2006, 2011, 2012 and accompanied in the 1996 Goddess calendars with this text:

In the west, the appeal of a Goddess of Compassion, may be attributed to the fact that for centuries it was to Mary, the Mother of God, that people turned to when praying for mercy and compassion.

Throughout history, and in numerous cultures and religions, the Goddess of Compassion has taken many forms; The fierce underwater goddess Sedna compassionately sends food to the Inuit. Among the Navajo's there is Changing Woman, (the creation spirit and deity), bestower of seeds, fruits and flowers and throughout all of Asia there is Quan Yin, goddess of infinite mercy and compassion, a protector of women and giver of children.
