| Based on a study of work previous to this painting, it appears this is Susan’s first totem formatted piece. An indigenous woman forms the base, supporting two owls, (each with a star on their heads). The symbolic meanings of the imagery in this piece is quite profound. In native cultures the owl represents wisdom, vision, insight and truth and is closely linked to the afterlife and the spirit world: a connection to departed souls.
The stag, in Welsh traditions, is a messenger between this world and the next, and a symbol of spiritual journeying. A rainbow, a full moon reflecting the light of the rainbow and the outline of a rising bird suggests the spiritual connection between Earth and the heavens. Two forest vignettes each with a standing doe form the background. Susan’s intention for the story of this piece shall remain untold. An intriguing early premonition of later Shaman period work.
This original work has been re-framed with an antiqued gilt custom wood frame. Archival triple-matted with suede mats. Acid-free materials throughout and re-glazed with Museum Conservation, Tru-Vue, UV protective glass. Signed by Susan Seddon Boulet bottom-left. Dated AUG 76.
