There are numerous stories about the origins of satyrs in Greek mythology. In some, they were the sons of the god Hermes, and in others, they were sons of various nymphs, who were the female spirits of nature. In any case, the satyrs were held to be wild forest creatures able to converse with the animals and who held deep respect for nature and the natural world. Led by the god Pan, the satyrs drank wine, played flutes and chased after nymphs and mortal women alike. In this way, they symbolized the wildness and animalism of the natural world.
Here Susan portrays a Satyr at twilight in a more restful, reflective mood as he sits by a tranquil pond, Pan pipe by his side.
This original work has been re-framed with an antiqued, gilt, custom wood frame. Archival triple-matted with suede bottom mat and black core, middle and top paper mats. Acid-free materials throughout and re-glazed with Conservation Clear, Tru-Vue, UV protective glass. Signed by Susan Seddon Boulet bottom. Dated Sept 72.
