Grandfather Wolf and His Lightning Stick

Image Size 16-3/4"H x 9-7/8"W
In this piece Susan creates a complex anthropomorphic merging of the wolf head, the figure, the human hands and the male face in the center of the figure. Shamans are known to be shapeshifters who can become an animal through trance, by travel to other worlds or through dancing. When a shaman dons animal skins and dances as an animal, she or he is that animal.

Here there is also an interesting framing of the figure, as if in a doorway, passing between the seen and the unseen. The additional eyes seen on the garment are a feature seen often in Susan's work; eyes represented "inner/outer looking" to Susan. The lightning stick is a device used by certain of the Pueblo Indians in rain-making ceremonies.
