Persephone and Demeter

Image Size 12"H x 10"W
Susan’s beautifully detailed and elegant portrayal of Persephone & Demeter. The story behind this piece and the painting are both emotionally powerful: an innocent maiden; a mother's grief at the abduction of her daughter and joy at her eventual return. The imagery in this piece is a paradigm of myths that explain natural processes; the yearly descent of the goddess in Winter, (as a result of ingesting Hades gift of the pomegranate), and her yearly return to Demeter in Spring, symbolized by a garland of forest flowers encircling Persephone’s head. This myth is a telling of the budding and dying of nature, the movement of the seasons. Imagery at the bottom center of the piece depicts Persephone entering the winter portal. Tears adorn Demeter's headpiece. A sensitive and powerful piece.
