From Michael Babcock: In addition to the circular format she so loved, beginning in 1973 Susan painted a number of pieces in oval format – nearly 1 in 5 works in the 1970s. This was one of the very first ovals. Presumably she liked them for the same reason she liked the circular format – they provided the boundaries that she liked to work in and helped her work to flow. The central image of this piece, the living woman merging into a boat, brings to mind the work of one of Susan’s favorite artists, the Mexican surrealist painter Remedios Varo. Susan’s work often stimulates the imagination: Who is this man and why is he “adrift” in the sea with his loyal dog? Why is the bird hovering on his shoulder? What is the story here? Perhaps the painting grew out of a children’s story or a fairy tale known to Susan or perhaps it is one created in her own rich and magical imagination.

TPG: Another fine example of Susan’s signature sgraffito technique used to create the intricate detail. Rich color and detail throughout. A beautiful, whimsical and thought provoking work.

This original work has been re-framed with an antiqued and gilt, custom wood frame. Archival double-matted with suede under mat and linen top mat. Acid-free materials throughout and re-glazed with Conservation Clear, Tru-Vue, UV protective glass. Signed by Susan Seddon Boulet, lower-right along the edge of the boat/tail. Dated March 73.
