|From Michael Babcock: Many people were first introduced to Susanís work through her many goddess paintings, available through numerous calendars, books and note cards. For Susan, goddesses were stories, a way of looking at an aspect of her own feminine nature. Asked how she chose her subjects, she said ďSometimes they are connected to part of my own process; sometimes Iím curious; sometimes Iíll read a story that interests me and it sparks my imagination.ď And elsewhere: ďBecause the only way that I can paint something is if Iím connected to the imagery, if it sparks something within my imagination.Ē Sometimes she would start work on a piece of a specific goddess and in other instances a piece evolved into a goddess as she worked. Her goddesses images included traditional representations that were often combined with her own vision and symbols. This is one of the early pieces on the new acid-free rag board that she began using in the early 1980s and shows her new method using pencil drawing to create some of the details in a piece.
TPG: In Greek mythology, Circe, was the most powerful of the three enchantresses and the daughter of Helios, the Sun god and Perse, one of the ocean nymphs. A tale of love scorned would be told by Roman writers... when Circe fell in love with Picus, who rejected her advances, in retribution she transformed him into a woodpecker.†When friends of Picus came to Circe to seek news of their friend, Circe transformed them into other animals, giving rise to much of the fauna found on the island on which she lived. †This piece is filled with animal imagery. A bird, a goat, a parrot, a long snouted rodent, and two fancy finned fish form Circeís flowing hair. Most likely Susanís portrait of the myth of Circe and the enchantresses unique abilities.
This original work has been re-framed with an antiqued gilt custom wood frame. Archival triple-matted with linen bottom & middle mats and suede top mat. Acid-free materials throughout and re-glazed with Museum Conservation, Tru-Vue, UV protective glass. Signed by Susan Seddon Boulet bottom-center. Dated Nov 81.
